An introductory workshop series where attendees begin learning how to design 2D graphic environments and objects for use in video game levels, websites, mobile apps, streaming videos and animations.
2D Environments (Beginner Level)
2D Environments Schedule Getting Started with 2D Art Tools & Layers Creating Backgrounds & Skies Creating Walls & Floors Creating Common Objects Creating Unique Items Polishing Artwork & Exporting Assets The Next Level of 2D Environment Art | Workshop Duration: COMING SOON Days: TBD Time: TBD Length: 50 min/session Where: Live Zoom Meetings Who: 5-10 learners per workshop Ages: 8+ $15 per lesson There are 6 lessons in total for this workshop series |
The 2D Environments workshop is a great entry point into the world of graphic design, and it is designed to be extremely accessible for those with little or no experience in graphic design. Students will experience the overall graphic design process from the initial concept phase, through design and development, and finally on to exporting and publishing their work.
Software development requires many tools and we often use the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite because it is one of the most popular and accessible toolsets that provides both professional and educational licenses. It is used by both aspiring and professional designers to create apps and games.
In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of using the 2D graphic design tools, and begin creating their own 2D environment artwork. They will be provided with links to the necessary tools and resources and encouraged to express their own creativity through the entire graphic design process.
HIGH QUALITY LESSONS
What differentiates our workshops from other online learning programs is that we are industry professionals that focus on providing real-time instructional support through our online Zoom meetings, and we embrace the complete world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) to illustrate how they are all intertwined within our technology and integral to all technology development.
By the end of this workshop, students will create their own 2D environmental artwork designs and be able to display them on a desktop computer or mobile device.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
In this workshop, students don’t need to have any previous 2D environment design experience because “2D Environments (Beginner Level)” is designed as a comfortable way for everyone to start developing design skills. Students will follow a user-friendly series of activities which will simulate what we, as professional game designers, must do to craft the games that are enjoyed by millions of users worldwide.
- Learn the basic fundamentals of 2D environment design.
- Learn how to use the interface and tools in Illustrator, Photoshop, Inkscape or GIMP to design, develop and produce 2D environment graphic designs.
- Learn how to design 2D graphics using layers.
- Create interesting 2D graphic environments and levels.
- Enhance the visuals of games or websites using additional graphic design techniques and programs.
- Learn the basics of color design and how to implement color into graphics.
- Learn how to export graphics and display them on multiple hardware platforms.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
Students will need to download and install software and tools before joining this workshop.
To install the Adobe Creative Suite or Free Alternative Software…
- You will need to install a 2D graphic design tool such as the Adobe Creative Cloud
- Adobe Creative Cloud: https://creativecloud.adobe.com/apps/download/creative-cloud
- OR try out free alternative programs like:
- (Free Photoshop alternatives)
- GIMP: https://www.gimp.org/downloads/
- Photopea: https://www.photopea.com/
- (Free Illustrator alternative)
- (Free Photoshop alternatives)
**PLEASE NOTE**
The installation of the software and tools can take 30 minutes or more to complete. We ask that everybody complete the installation before the start of the first workshop lesson. This will ensure that we can start promptly and cover all the learning materials scheduled for the first lesson. Thank you for your cooperation.
**NEED HELP?** If you need live technical assistance installing and configuring your software or tools we offer additional technology drop-in sessions on our Coziplans Tutorbird calendar to help get students ready before the first day of the workshop.
The Adobe Creative Cloud is a professional-grade software suite, and it does require a decent computer. Adobe products run on most Windows and Mac machines, but the better your video card (GPU) and the more RAM you have (8GB bare minimum) the better your experience will be.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
- This workshop is not designed as a drop-in program. Each workshop lesson and workshop level in this series builds upon the previous one.
- This is a 2D graphic design workshop that primarily uses the Adobe Creative Suite to teach 2D environmental design.
- Like in professional game and software development, we must cover many topics including: planning, design, art, coding, math, science, and many other areas of technology.
- Game and software development is very complex and does not happen in a bubble. Multiple programs are used including: Illustrator, Photoshop, Unity Engine, Visual Studio and more. These programs are regularly updated with new features and improvements, so there can be a lot of downloading, installing and troubleshooting in this workshop – just like in real professional game and software development.
- Coding is not the focus of this workshop because coding alone does not make a video game or application successful. However, the challenges and opportunities to code increases with each of our higher game coding workshop levels, so we encourage those interested in these areas to check out these additional opportunities on our calendar.
- This schedule is subject to change according to the needs of the class as determined by the instructor.
PARENTAL GUIDANCE
- The Adobe Creative Suite is professional software and we do our best to make the workshop content accessible to everyone whether they are using the professional software or other alternative educational applications. Please be patient because this is a group workshop where participants may be starting at different skill levels.
- When we do write code, we learn that everything does not always work perfectly on the first try. Troubleshooting is a major part of software/game development, and students will be learning why things failed in this workshop. Please be patient because debugging is an important part of the learning process, and of how we must teach sustainable software engineering skills.
- We encourage students that enjoy additional challenges and pushing boundaries to try the next level up if they have mastered this workshop level.
- Most importantly, we want to remind everyone that these workshops are meant to be both educational and fun, so please speak up or contact us if you have any questions.
